Welcome to Parkin

Parkin

Parkin is one of the few communities in the country that can trace its documented history back to the 16th century. Evidence suggests it was the location of the Casqui American Indian settlement, which Hernando de Soto documented on his journey through the area in 1541. Parkin Archeological State Park, an official interpretive center for the Great River Road National Scenic Byway, has conserved the major Casqui mound.

The town was named after William Parkin of Memphis, who was in charge of laying tracks for the Iron Mountain railroad in the late 1880s. It quickly became a sawmill and lumber town, with the Northern Ohio Cooperage and Lumber Company and the Lansing Wheelbarrow Company as the two major businesses. On land that is now part of the state park, a school for the children of African American mill employees was built in 1910. The school has been restored and is accessible to the public.

Both large mills closed in the 1940s, and the village changed to its current agricultural concentration. Due to a German prisoner of war camp created in Parkin that contracted out prisoners to meet the labor shortage, farming operations were able to continue throughout World War II. Bette Greene’s novel “Summer of My German Soldier” was inspired by her childhood memories of the Parkin inmates.

Parkin, just 30 miles northwest of Memphis, was a popular stop for touring musicians such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and B. B. King. Chester Arthur “Howlin’ Wolf” Burnett, another well-known performer, began to play the harmonica after coming to Parkin in his early twenties.
