1901

The city of Chisholm was founded in 1901 and was named for Archibald Mark Chisholm, a prominent Mesabi Iron Range explorer. The vast forest of huge pines that previously blanketed the area attracted early settlers. Several logging camps sprang up along the shores of Longyear Lake, named after E.J. Longyear, who discovered the city’s current location and began the first mine here.

1908

The whole business center and two-thirds of the residential dwellings were destroyed by a catastrophic forest fire in 1908. The news of this massive calamity shocked the entire state, and neighboring towns and municipalities rushed to offer assistance. New homes, schools, churches, parks, a library, community building, and downtown businesses were built as a result of the community’s efforts, and the area became known as the “Cradle of Minnesota’s Mining Heritage.” The 1908 structures in Chisholm’s downtown add to the allure of visiting this mining town today.

Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham, one of Chisholm’s most famous residents, is also featured on all of the banners. Doc Graham was a community and school doctor for fifty years and played right field for the New York Giants in a single major league game on June 29th 1905. He was portrayed by Burt Lancaster in the 1989 film “The Field of Dreams.” Doc Graham’s house is still extant and can be visited, but his spirit is honored every year in August at Doc “Moonlight” Graham Days.
