Bay Saint Louis is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. It is located 58 miles (93 kilometers) northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, on the Mississippi Sound (a Gulf of Mexico embayment) near the mouth to St. Louis Bay (named after Louis IX of France in 1699). Thomas Shields received the land in 1789 as part of a Spanish land grant. After the completion of the New Orleans, Mobile, and Chattanooga Railroad in 1869, the community quickly became a retreat for wealthy planters and, later, tourists. Shieldsborough was incorporated in 1818, while Bay Saint Louis was incorporated in 1882.
During the War of 1812, the bay was the site of the Battle of Pass Christian, a naval fight against the British. Casino gambling spurred the city’s expansion in the late twentieth century, considerably increasing the importance of tourism to the local economy. Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on Bay Saint Louis and most of Hancock County in 2005; the nearby city of Waveland was virtually leveled. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) John C. Stennis Space Center located about 15 miles west of the city.
