What did you say?

There are 7139 languages. I know, that figure surprised me as well, that is an astronomical number. When you think of languages, German, English, French, Japanese, Spanish & Chinese probably come to mind. You have to consider the local dialects of each country, when you do you’ll most likely see how one could end up with 7139. Most people can speak two languages. There are guaranteed benefits to learning a third, fourth or fifth language.

1. Learning another language may improve your memory. It’s the best exercise for your brain. When you’re learning a new language test yourself, see how much of yesterday’s lesson you can remember, try to make your own sentences, try to translate words from one language to the next. Try, cháng shì und wiederhollen.

2. Connect with people. To learn another language is to learn something about the culture of a country. It helps you to understand things better, because, you’ll most likely end up learning about their history. This means that you’ll not only understand what is being said to you, but you’ll understand why culturally things are done in a certain way. You’ll have something else to discuss other than the weather

3. Advance your career. There are many countries in the world. You might find yourself unable to further your career. You’re a key accounts manager in London, you want a raise, a change of scenery, you need a challenge because you feel stuck in your current situation. Did you know that one of the highest-earning careers in Austria, is that of a key accounts manager? A key accounts manager can rake in €80000 per year.
You’re welcome.

4. Boost your confidence. Because of population, two of the most spoken languages in the world are Spanish and Chinese. Apparently, 75% of the global population can either speak Chinese, Spanish, or both. Imagine if you’re able to converse in one of them. You’ll be able to travel to Singapore, Spain, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, or Mexico. Make loads of new friends in different countries or find work. Imagine how this lifestyle of jet-setting & popularity will make you feel.

In 2010 I moved to China, I’ve been living here for the past 11 years, I can speak & understand a little of the language now. In 2009 I knew that I was going to move, I wish I studied the language before I moved, it would’ve made a huge difference in my life. In this day & age, there are plenty of apps & platforms where you can learn a language, all it takes is 15 minutes of your time, dedication & willpower.
